The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony
One of the catchiest songs ever in my opinion, this song has been the soundtrack to adverts, mentioned in films and even been used in an episode of the Simpsons! Released in June 1997, it achieved the Richard Ashcroft and his band mates Brit, Grammy and MTV Music Awards nominations despite it not even getting to number 1 in the charts, instead having to settle for second place!
The music video features Ashcroft walking down a street in London and knocking into an elderly lady, jumper over a car and refusing to move direction for anyone.
Blur – Song 2
This alternative rock song by one of the biggest Britpop bands of the nineties is just 2.02 in length, but even that is long enough for song to create a massive impression. Over the last 20 years the song has featured in dozens of video games including FIFA, Guitar Hero, Lego Rock Band and Rocksmith.
Many others bands have also covered the song such as Earl Zinger and My Chemical Romance in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
Oasis-D’You Know What I Mean?
Released in July 1997 this song went straight in at number 1 in the charts and became the 12th biggest selling single of that year. The song has also features on NME’s list of the “150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years”.
In an interview with the BBC in 1997, in true Noel Gallagher style he claimed: “I can’t believe I wrote it, it’s going to blow people away.”
